Reflection #3

Hello my friends,
This week I came upon a game changer for my genius hour. In my previous posts I discussed how I was having a hard time fitting mindfulness practice into my everyday routine... and while this is something that I would like to be able to do, I just don't think I am at a place where that is going to happen, and that is ok.
I was doing some self reflection the other day upon having a pretty rough mental health day, and remembered something that a counsellor that I spoke to several years ago said to me about brushing our teeth. She was trying to help me to become more aware of my thoughts, and she asked "what do you think about when you are brushing your teeth ?" ,  my initial response was that I was not too sure what I thought about while brushing my teeth... she then followed up by saying " I am almost certain it is not about brushing your teeth".
I won't lie I did not even attempt to try being mindful while brushing my teeth at the time, but in my defence I was 17 and didn't  fully understand what mindfulness even was.. or why this was going to be useful.

Looking back now and with taking an undergraduate degree in psychology I have a better appreciation and understanding of the amazing benefits of mindfulness practices, so I thought I would try it out.

What do I think about when brushing my teeth?
-am I going tot be late ?
-did I submit that assignment?
-I think I failed that presentation
-COFFEE???

So when I went to brush my teeth on this day I tried my very best to be mindful of what I was doing, the movements, the smell, the taste. I know that after one time I will not see results but one benefit was that that it took away 2 minutes of my day that I usually spent worrying or overthinking and replaced it with something beneficial.
